Over 44 million US households speak Spanish. But walk into most American bookstores (or browse online) and the "Spanish section" is an afterthought.
A handful of translations, a few Dora titles, maybe some bilingual board books with clip-art illustrations.
It's not that great Spanish children's books don't exist. They do — thousands of them!
They just don't make it to your shelves.
Crazy, right? But it's true.
Spanish-language books make up less than 1% of the US book market. And families that want to give their kids the life-changing gift of a second language, pay the price for that shortcoming.
That is why Sol Book Box exists.
We partner with publishers around the globe — Latin America, Spain, & across the U.S. — to give every familia the storytime they deserve.
The result: Richer stories. More authentic voices. Books that make your child feel something real en español — whether you're a fluent family, or a Spanish newbie.

Here's what we look for when we curate our boxes — you should, too!

It all starts here, right? Boring, generic characters can lead to restless, apathetic readers pretty darn quick! Look for the ones that truly stand out and break the mold, eschewing two-dimensional tropes and stereotypes with a one-of-a-kind creation.
Why this is hard to find: Many of the Spanish children's books you'll find on US shelves feature characters that feel generic — they don't authentically reflect Hispanic / multicultural families, settings, or daily life.
When a character named "María" lives in a house that looks like suburban Ohio and celebrates holidays with no cultural specificity — kids notice, even if they can't articulate it.
The best character-driven Spanish books come from authors who are writing for their own communities first. That's where the magic is.
Try these libros for some characters you and your reader won't soon forget:

By Emma Otheguy, illustrated by Sara Palacios
A fun, visually rich tale about a girl navigating a family full of boisterous, well-meaning tías. Every scene pulses with intergenerational energy and cultural specificity — from abuela’s wise advice to the chaos of too many opinions at once. It’s joyful, but also unmistakably rooted in Latino family life.

By Juana Martinez-Neal
In her author-illustrator debut, Juana Martinez-Neal opens a treasure box of discovery for children who may be curious about their own origin or name story.

Children love a good adventure, and some of the most successful authors excel at crafting plots that encourage children to root for the characters and breathlessly try to figure out what's going to happen next!
Even on subsequent reads (and there should be plenty of those if the book does its job) they make your child feel excited to turn each and every page.
Why this is hard to find: Great storytelling requires cultural fluency. Humor, pacing, tension — these all land differently across cultures. A joke that works in English often falls flat in translation. The best Spanish stories are written in Spanish, by authors who understand the rhythm of the language and the references that resonate.
Try these books for some truly page-turning stories:

By Gracia Iglesias, illustrated bySara Sánchez
Timoteo wants to throw a party, but his house is a disaster — and his friends aren't having it. Enter a kinetic, page-turning clean-up mission with rhythm, repetition, and escalating action. What starts as a mess becomes a team-powered transformation, full of movement and humor toddlers love.

Written & illustrated by Chris Haughton
A beautiful and witty board book (with an adorable main character) charting the journey of Little Owl who is just 'a bit lost'. Will Pequeño Búho, with the help of his newfound friend Ardilla, find his home?

It's amazing how enamored young children can become by images — and rightly so! Illustrations help your child make sense of the book's contents and help them get to know and better understand the characters and the settings.
Why this is hard to find: Some of the most talented children's book illustrators in the world are working in Latin America and Spain — and their books are rarely distributed in the US. We're talking about artists who win international awards, whose work is celebrated across the Spanish-speaking world, but whose books you'll rarely see at your local library or Barnes & Noble.
For some out-of-this-world illustrations, try these libros with your reader:

By Sonia Encinas, illustrated by César Barceló
A declaration of love from parents to their son, with stunning art by award-winning illustrator Sonja Wimmer. From the team behind the award-winning Hija.

By Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Corinna Luyken
From a Newbery Medal-winning author and a New York Times bestselling illustrator comes a deeply moving ode to the complexity and uniqueness of every child.

The world is a beautifully diverse place. Children's books that celebrate diversity and different cultures can help your child recognize that every person they encounter is unique — and that's a beautiful thing! The more open-minded your child is, the more accepting they'll be toward others and the more appreciative they will feel about their own culture and heritage.
Why this is hard to find: This is the big one. "Culturally authentic" doesn't mean sombreros and maracas. It means stories that reflect real Latino life — the complexity of identity, the specificity of traditions, the humor that only makes sense if you grew up in it. These books exist. They're just not the ones that typically show up when you search Amazon or browse the shelf at Barnes & Noble.
To expand your child's world, give these books a look:

By Ruth Behar, illustrated by Devon Holzwarth
A lyrical book about tradition, culture, and togetherness exploring Tía and Estrella's Sephardic Jewish and Cuban heritage. Through Tía's journey, Estrella will learn that as long as you have your family, home is truly where the heart is

By Monica Brown, illustrated by Elisa Chavarri
A fascinating bilingual picture book biography of Peruvian archaeologist and national icon Julio C. Tello, who unearthed Peru's ancient cultures and fostered pride in the country's Indigenous history.
